More Infomation:
Founded: 1910
Director: Dr Samir Rizkalla Bekheet
Beginnings:
In 1889, Dr Frank Harpur, an Irish missionary, began working among the villages of the Nile Delta using a houseboat. He was especially welcomed by the people of Menouf, who gave him a piece of land on which he founded the Harpur Memorial Hospital.
Activities:
Health
- The Hospital has 120 members of staff, 75 beds and two operating theatres. It has recently been renovated, enabling it to provide comprehensive and modern standards of patient medical care. Fees are kept low and those who cannot afford them receive free treatment. No patient is ever turned away. Children receive free immunisations and check-ups.
- The Hospital introduced a medical records department in 1983, which is unique in the area. It also aims to reach out to the local community and offers preventative health education and business loans to local villagers.
- Leprosy patients come to this hospital from across Egypt, having been refused treatment from other hospitals. At Harpur Memorial Hospital, as well as being medically treated, they are loved and accepted.
