Gaza shore1 June 2010
Yesterday brought the terrible news from the Middle East that an Israeli commando raid on a flotilla of aid ships bound for Gaza had gone badly wrong, with at least ten of the pro-Palestinian activists on board killed, and many others, including some of the Israeli commandos, injured. The UN Security Council has called for an impartial inquiry into the incident. The British Foreign Secretary has deplored the loss of life and called on the Government of Israel to open all crossings for aid to enter Gaza.

Jeremy Moodey, chief executive of Christian relief and development charity BibleLands, which focuses exclusively on the Middle East, said that the incident was yet another sad episode in the cycle of bloodshed which has claimed so many lives in Israel and the occupied Palestinian territory.

"It is still too early to know what really happened on board the Gaza convoy, and we must await any inquiry before passing judgement. But even Israelis are acknowledging that the raid on the ships was mishandled. At this time our first reaction must be to pray for those who were injured, or who lost loved ones. Such a loss of life was totally unnecessary.

"What is clear is that the Israeli blockade of Gaza is causing great hardship in the territory, and that this matter needs to be resolved as a matter of priority. As a United Nations report observed only last week, most of the property and infrastructure damaged in Israel's offensive on the Gaza Strip last year is still unrepaired twelve months later, and aid efforts have been largely ineffective.

"But BibleLands is doing its bit to help in Gaza. Although the Christian community is tiny, we are supporting Christian-led clinics and refugee work in the territory. Last year we gave £180,000 to the Anglican hospital at Al-Ahli in Gaza, to be used for a range of purposes, including the treatment of women and underweight children and fuel for ambulances. There is a non-violent way to help the people of Gaza recover their dignity and livelihoods."
